The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has launched an extensive consumer education campaign to address growing concerns over data depletion and quality of service among telecom users.

As part of its mandate to ensure fairness and transparency in Nigeria’s digital ecosystem, the NCC has introduced practical solutions to help users manage and conserve their data effectively.

The NCC’s Consumer Affairs Bureau (CAB), a key department within the Commission, has been actively educating telecom consumers on ways to optimize data usage. Established in 2001, the CAB is tasked with protecting consumer rights and enhancing service quality, as outlined in Chapter VII of the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA 2003).

In collaboration with the Association of Licensed Telecommunication Companies of Nigeria (ALTON), the NCC has launched a nationwide campaign titled “Ways to Save Data!” This initiative is designed to empower telecom subscribers with knowledge on how to reduce data consumption and better manage their usage.

The NCC has outlined eight actionable steps for consumers to conserve their data and improve their digital experience:

1.Monitor Data Usage Regularly
Check your data usage frequently to track consumption. Most smartphones include built-in trackers, or you can download third-party apps to monitor your usage.

2. Utilize Wi-Fi Networks
Always connect to Wi-Fi whenever possible, whether at home, work, or public locations like cafes and libraries, to minimize reliance on mobile data.

3. Disable Automatic Updates
Turn off automatic updates for apps and operating systems. Instead, update manually when connected to a Wi-Fi network.

4. Restrict Background Data Usage
Limit apps from consuming data in the background. This can be done by adjusting settings for specific apps on your device.

5. Download Content for Offline Use
Use Wi-Fi to download movies, music, and other media for offline use, reducing data consumption when accessing these resources later.

6. Turn Off Location Services
Disable GPS and other location services for apps that don’t require them. Location tracking can consume significant amounts of data.

7. Install Ad-Blockers
Use ad-blocking tools to prevent ads from using up your data while browsing or using apps.

8. Upgrade to a Larger Data Plan
If data depletion persists despite taking precautions, consider switching to a more extensive data plan that better suits your needs.

The NCC encourages all telecom users to adopt these strategies to gain better control over their data usage. The Commission stated:
“By following these suggestions, you can reduce the amount of data you use and prevent unnecessary depletion on your mobile phone.”

The NCC remains committed to empowering Nigerian telecom users by providing resources and guidance to enhance their digital experience. Through initiatives like this, the Commission ensures consumers are better informed and equipped to navigate the evolving digital landscape.
