National Assembly vacate seats

Senator Monday Okpebholo, APC, Edo Central and Rep Dennis Idahosa have respectively vacated their seats in the National Assembly.

Senator Okpebholo and Rep Idahosa who were elected into the 10th National Assembly in the February 2023 National Assembly election vacated their legislative offices following their inauguration as governor and deputy governor respectively of Edo State on Tuesday.

GWG.ng reports that the constitution provides that the inauguration of a member of the National Office into an executive office such as governor or deputy governor is an automatic trigger to the exit of such elected legislators from the National Assembly.

Section 68 (1) (d) that defines how the new executive office holders are vacated their legislative seats states thus

(1) A member of the Senate or of the House of Representatives shall vacate his seat in the House of which he is a member if –

(d) he becomes President, Vice-President, Governor, Deputy Governor or a Minister of the Government of the Federation or a Commissioner of the Government of a State or a Special Adviser.

GWG.ng reports that Okpebholo and Denis Idahosa had individually sought the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress, APC and the baton fell on Okpebholo who following interventions by party elders picked Idahosa as his running mate.

Their inauguration into their respective offices as governor and deputy governor meant that Okpebholo and Idahosa have now vacated their National Assembly offices setting the stage for bye-elections into the respective offices.
