The Edo State House of Assembly has officially confirmed Samson Osagie as the new Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in the state.

This decision follows his nomination by Governor Monday Okpebholo alongside Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole, the son of former Governor Adams Oshiomhole, as commissioners in his cabinet. Dr. Oshiomhole was nominated to head the Ministry of Health.

Governor Okpebholo was sworn into office on Tuesday in a ceremony attended by fellow governors and political figures from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). During the ceremony, the governor also submitted a letter requesting additional funds to support the state government’s operations.

The House members, in approving Osagie for the role, noted his extensive experience, having served two terms in the Edo State House of Assembly and previously represented the Orhionmwon/Uhunmwonde Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives. The members emphasized that the position of Attorney-General was crucial for the state’s governance, making Osagie’s selection an important one.

Speaker of the House, Blessing Agbebaku, congratulated Osagie, recognizing his valuable contributions during his tenure as a member from 1999 to 2007. Agbebaku also highlighted that it is a tradition in the House to honor former members with the oath of office when they return in new roles.

Regarding the appointment of Dr. Oshiomhole as Commissioner for Health, Agbebaku stated that a decision would be made on Monday, November 18, 2024. Meanwhile, the Clerk of the House, Alhaji Yahaya Omoigba, presented the governor’s request for additional funds, which was signed by Okpebholo himself. The Speaker directed the request to the House’s standing committee on appropriation, allowing one week for the committee to prepare a report for approval by the full House.
