A source said the gunmen, dressed in black outfits, fired shots sporadically at the military checkpoint. During the attack, one of the assailants was heard making threats directed at the state’s governor, Alex Otti.

Gunmen reportedly attacked a military checkpoint in Abia State on Wednesday morning. The incident took place at Umuopara, in the Ekenobizi area of Umuahia South Local Government Area, close to the boundary between Abia and Imo states.

A source said the gunmen, dressed in black outfits, fired shots sporadically at the checkpoint. During the attack, one of the assailants was heard making threats directed at the state’s governor, Alex Otti.

“We’re removing it, Alex Chioma Otti, we are removing it. Alex, we’re giving you people order. We say we don’t need this kind of nonsense again,” the gunman said.

He continued, “Today is 13th of November 2024. Alex, we’re dismantling this checkpoint and we’re giving you a direct order not to come close. If we see this nonsense again, Alex, you are gone. If we see this nonsense again, you are gone, Alex.”

This attack comes just days after soldiers from the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Barracks at the 14 Brigade headquarters in Ohafia successfully repelled an attempted attack on police and military checkpoints in the state.
