Ten Teams Secure Spots In 2025 AFCON Tournament
Ivory Coast and Equatorial Guinea have officially secured their spots in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which will take place in Morocco.
Both teams accomplished this without playing any matches in November 2024, as the penultimate round of qualifiers began on Wednesday.
Ivory Coast confirmed their qualification after a series of strong performances, ensuring they would finish in the top two of Group G. Their place in the finals was solidified by Sierra Leone’s 1-1 draw with Chad, which led to Chad’s elimination from the race. Ivory Coast now leads Group G with nine points from four matches, while Zambia is in second place with seven points. Sierra Leone, with five points and one match left, has slim chances of advancing.
In Group E, Liberia’s hard-fought 1-0 victory over Togo in Monrovia resulted in the elimination of both Liberia and Togo. However, this outcome guaranteed Equatorial Guinea’s qualification for the AFCON finals. Equatorial Guinea has accumulated seven points from their four qualifying games. Liberia has four points from five matches, while Togo sits at the bottom of the group with only two points.
Even in a scenario where Liberia finishes with the same number of points as Equatorial Guinea, their unfavorable head-to-head record would prevent them from qualifying.
As of now, several teams have already secured their places in the 2025 AFCON finals, including Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea, Algeria, and Cameroon. Other strong teams, such as Angola, Burkina Faso, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Morocco, and Senegal, have also qualified.
The excitement continues, with additional qualifying matches set to take place on Thursday, featuring key teams like Nigeria, Sudan, and Tunisia, who are all vying for a spot in the prestigious tournament.
