Niniola being independent

Nigerian singer Niniola has shared her reasons for choosing to stay independent in her music career, despite receiving offers from record labels.

She explained that she turned down these offers because she values the business side of music, which many of her colleagues overlook.

In an interview with TVC, the singer emphasized that being an independent artiste allows her to maintain creative control. She explained, “I have been an independent artiste for 10 years. There are pros and cons of signing with a record label. I have seen the business side of doing music which a lot of people don’t see, they just focus only on making music.”

Niniola revealed that she was once offered a record deal after the release of her debut single but was hesitant. She did not want to lose her unique style, especially because Afro-house music was still relatively new at the time. “A label wanted to sign me after my debut single but I was sceptical because I didn’t want anyone to switch my style. At that time, nobody was doing Afro-house. They can dictate what you do because they are the ones financing you,” she said.

For Niniola, the freedom to create without restrictions is one of the biggest benefits of being independent. “For me, creative freedom is one of the major pros of being an indie artist,” she added.

Additionally, Niniola shared that while she is an introvert by nature, music allows her to express a more extroverted side of herself.

Niniola Apata was born to the family of Rt. Brigadier General Simeon Olaosebikan Apata and Mrs. Margaret Apata on 15 December 1986 and raised in Lagos State, Nigeria. She is the direct elder sister to Teni.

She participated in the sixth season of Project Fame West Africa in 2013. After releasing her debut single “Ibadi,” she was nominated for Most Promising Act to Watch at the 2015 Nigeria Entertainment Awards.
