FUGUS on Odoh's documents

The Federal Ministry of Education has removed Professor Bernard Odoh from his position as Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.

Along with this decision, the university’s Governing Council has also been dissolved following its role in the emergence of Odoh as vice-chancellor of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University.

This announcement was made on Wednesday by Folashade Boriowo, the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry of Education.

The removal followed complaints from the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). ASUU accused the Governing Council of not following the correct procedures in appointing Professor Odoh. The union had earlier urged the Ministry of Education to dissolve the council, pointing out several illegal actions.

The Ministry explained the reasons behind its decision in a statement: “The Federal Government has announced the dissolution of the Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, following grave breaches of the laws governing the university and disregard for lawful directives from the Federal Ministry of Education.”

According to the statement, the Governing Council’s chairman had chosen a Vice-Chancellor without following the rules. The person appointed did not meet the basic requirements for the role. This caused conflicts and unrest in the university.

Dr. Tunji Alausa, the Minister of Education, stressed the need for quick action to stop the situation from getting worse. He said the actions of the Governing Council were creating instability in the university.

The statement also confirmed the removal of Professor Odoh. It said an Acting Vice-Chancellor would soon be named.

Additionally, a new Governing Council will be set up to ensure the university is managed properly and in line with the law which will in turn lead the way in the emergence of a new vice-chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University.
