Nigerian Army Investigates Viral Allegations of Assault
The Acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has ordered an immediate investigation into a viral video showing an alleged case of brutality involving a Nigerian army officer and two soldiers in Abuja.
This directive was announced on Tuesday by the Nigerian Army’s Director of Public Relations, Maj.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, in a statement released in Abuja.
The video, widely circulated on social media, depicts an altercation between the Nigeian Army personnel and a man and woman, allegedly resulting in physical abuse. The incident has sparked outrage, with calls for accountability over the soldiers’ actions.
Maj.-Gen. Nwachukwu noted that the exact circumstances leading to the incident were still unclear. However, the army has committed to investigating the matter thoroughly to establish the facts.
“The Acting Chief of Army Staff has ordered an immediate investigation to unravel the true circumstances surrounding this altercation,” the statement reads.
He further assured the public that the Nigerian Army remains steadfast in its mission to serve and protect all law-abiding citizens as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The army has appealed for patience and pledged transparency, urging Nigerians to trust that due diligence will be exercised to bring the issue to a logical conclusion.
