A shake-up has unfolded within President Bola Tinubu’s media team, following confusion surrounding Daniel Bwala’s role as special adviser and spokesperson to the president.

Initially appointed as the special adviser on media and public communication, Daniel Bwala’s title was swiftly adjusted to special adviser on policy communication, less than 24 hours after he appeared to assume the position of presidential spokesperson.

According to The Cable, the controversy began when Daniel Bwala addressed journalists at the State House, where he presented himself in a manner that suggested he was now the president’s chief spokesperson. This raised eyebrows, as Bayo Onanuga, the special adviser on information and strategy, had been managing public communications since Ajuri Ngelale’s resignation in September.

Reports indicate that President Tinubu, who was attending the G20 summit in Brazil, was displeased with Bwala’s actions. Sources suggested that Bwala may have sought to take advantage of Onanuga’s absence, as the latter is accompanying Tinubu in Brazil.

In response, Onanuga released a statement clarifying the structure of the president’s media team. He emphasized that the presidency does not have a sole spokesperson, with communication duties instead divided among himself, Bwala, and Sunday Dare, the special adviser on media and public communications.

Bwala’s updated role will now focus on policy communication, requiring close collaboration with Hadiza Bala Usman, who oversees policy coordination in the presidency. This restructuring aims to prevent future misunderstandings and ensure smoother operations within Tinubu’s communication apparatus.

As the dust settles, many are watching to see how the president’s media team will navigate this high-profile reshuffle and the fallout as it affects Daniel Bwala following his hours-long stint as spokesperson to the President.
