Why Super Eagles Lost To Rwanda – Gernot Rohr
Benin Republic’s head coach, Gernot Rohr, has pointed to complacency as the reason behind the Super Eagles’ unexpected loss to Rwanda in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
The match, held at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, ended with a 2-1 victory for Rwanda over the three-time African champions.
Despite the loss, the Super Eagles had already secured their spot in the 2025 AFCON, which will be held in Morocco. They achieved qualification after a 1-1 draw with Benin Republic earlier in the week.
Speaking about the defeat, Gernot Rohr, who previously coached the Nigerian team, explained that the Super Eagles might have reduced their efforts after confirming their qualification. According to him, this allowed Rwanda to take advantage of the situation.
“In the match against Nigeria, we were under pressure but managed to equalize just minutes before the end,” Rohr said. He added, “Having coached this team, I’ve observed that they sometimes ease off when they feel secure in their progression.”
The coach emphasized that this tendency to relax when feeling safe can give opponents an opportunity to stage a surprise, which was exactly what happened in the match against Rwanda.
Despite their defeat, the Super Eagles finished at the top of Group D, while Benin Republic, led by Rohr, secured second place in the group.
