Again! Libya Accused of Hostility Toward Benin Republic in AFCON Qualifiers (Video)

Libya is under heavy criticism following alleged hostile treatment of the Benin Republic team during their final AFCON 2025 qualifying match in Tripoli.

The Benin players described their experience as a “war zone,” citing disrespect and violence from Libyan authorities and fans throughout their stay.

The team alleged that hostility began at the airport and escalated at the stadium, where fans disrupted their national anthem with chants. After the match ended in a 0-0 draw, Libyan fans reportedly pelted the Benin squad with rocks and other projectiles. The situation worsened when Libyan police allegedly forced their way into the Benin team bus, assaulting their coach, Gernot Rohr, private security personnel, and several players, causing injuries.

GWG.ng reports that this incident follows a similar controversy last month, when Libya diverted Nigeria’s Super Eagles to an insecure airport, leaving the team stranded without basic amenities. That situation led to a $50,000 fine for Libya and an awarded 3-0 victory to Nigeria.

As Libya’s elimination from AFCON 2025 was confirmed after Rwanda defeated Nigeria on Monday, many African football fans believe the hostility toward Benin Republic stemmed from frustration over their failed campaign.

Calls are mounting for the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to take decisive action, with some demanding Libya’s indefinite suspension or a relocation of future matches away from their territory.
