The National Economic Council (NEC) has given Adamawa, Kebbi, Kwara states, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) one week to submit their positions on the proposed establishment of state police.

Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, announced this decision while addressing State House correspondents after the council’s 146th meeting held at Aso Rock Villa, Abuja. According to Diri, the three states and the FCT were the only entities out of Nigeria’s 36 states yet to provide feedbacks on the proposal.

Providing updates, Diri said, “On the state police, the council was informed that 33 states have submitted their positions, while three states and the FCT are yet to do so.”

He elaborated further, saying, “These three states are Adamawa, Kebbi, and incidentally Kwara, which is the state of the Governors’ Forum Chairman, alongside the FCT. The council mandated these remaining states and the FCT to make their submissions within the next one week.”

The governor added that the council aims to consolidate the inputs from all states and present a unified position on the matter at its next meeting.

The proposed establishment of state police has been a critical point of discussion, with many states already contributing their perspectives. The deadline set by NEC signals a push to finalize consultations and advance discussions on this significant issue.
