The Labour Party has strongly denied allegations that it is collaborating with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in preparation for the 2027 general elections.

The claims, made by lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju in a viral video, have been dismissed as baseless and defamatory by the party.

In a statement issued on Thursday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the Labour Party reiterated its position as Nigeria’s leading opposition voice under the leadership of its National Chairman, Barrister Julius Abure.

“The Labour Party has on several occasions debunked allegations of any unholy alliance with the APC. Our National Chairman is at the forefront of critiquing the government, challenging systemic failures, and advocating for electoral reforms,” Ifoh said.

The statement highlighted several initiatives launched by the Labour Party since the 2023 elections, including the creation of an Electoral Reform Committee and a Political Education Committee aimed at fostering transparency, fairness, and civic reorientation. The party also emphasized its pioneering move towards participatory democracy through an e-membership registration platform, which has attracted thousands of Nigerians.

Dismissing Adeyanju’s claims as harmful and unsubstantiated, the Labour Party challenged him to provide evidence of his allegations or retract his comments and issue a public apology. “We view his viral remarks as a criminal defamation designed to tarnish our hard-earned reputation,” the statement added.

The party expressed disappointment over the damage caused by Adeyanju’s assertions, describing them as “callous” and “ridiculous.” It also warned against further attempts to “demarket” the party and its leadership.

The Labour Party called on Adeyanju to substantiate his claims with facts or face the legal consequences of defamation. The party remains committed to its role as an active opposition force, advocating for good governance and accountability in Nigeria.

“As a Political Party, we view Deji Adeyanju’s now viral comments as a criminal defamation, a clearly motivated ploy to ridicule our hard earned reputation. We are therefore calling on Mr Adeyanju who ought to know the grave consequences of a defamatory act, to without delay provide facts and evidences to prove that Labour Party has been ‘bought’ over by President Tinubu. He also has a choice to withdraw his ill assertions and apologize to the leadership and millions of members of Labour Party for the great harm he has caused the party.”- the party concluded.
