A fire outbreak early Saturday morning caused significant damage to the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Teaching Hospital in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, destroying property worth millions of naira.

Sources within the LAUTECH Teaching hospital reported that the fire outbreak, which started around 5 a.m. in the pediatrics consultant’s office, is suspected to have been triggered by an electrical spark. The fire spread to the Emergency and Accident Unit, razing office equipment, books, electronic gadgets, and other items, including the roof and ceiling.

About 16 patients were urgently evacuated from the ward where the fire outbreak affected to prevent further harm.

Confirming the incident, the LAUTECH Public Relations Officer, Omotayo Ogunleye, described the fire as a “minor incident” and assured the public that normal hospital activities had resumed.

“Yes, it is true. It is a minor incident. But normal activities have resumed in the hospital,” Ogunleye stated during a phone conversation with journalists.

Efforts are ongoing to assess the full extent of the damage while ensuring the safety and well-being of patients and staff.

GWG.ng reports that the fire incident at LAUTECH again brings to bear the impact of fluctuations of the country’s electricity grid system which over the years have triggered negative impact on homes and business places.
