National Assembly To Make First Lady Co-President In January

The National Assembly of Nicaragua is set to elevate the country’s First Lady to the position of co-president with her husband under new constitutional amendments that greatly enlarge the powers of the power couple.

GWG.ng reports that Nicaragua’s national assembly is firmly under the control of Ortega’s ruling FSLN party, and the parliament chief, Gustavo Porras, said the first passage of the proposal was pushed through on Friday without opposition.

With total control over the parliament, the second reading is all but guaranteed to be approved when it comes up next January making Nicaragua a record of having a man and wife as co-presidents of a country.

GWG.ng reports that Ortega and his wife, have over time drawn power to their family. Ms Rosario María Murillo Zambrana, a poet, started off as the wife of the ferocious revolutionary fighter who came to power and governed the Central America country with repressive Marxist ideology between 1985 and 1990 when he was eased out in a democratic election.

Following Ortega’s return to power in 2007, she was recognised as First Lady and then in 2017 as Vice-President.

The elevation to the position of co-president is coming along with proposals to enhance the powers of the co-presidents above other democratic levers in Nicaragua.

Under the new constitutional reforms, the media and dissenters will be especially punished with ‘traitors to the homeland’ being stripped of their citizenship.

Under the new proposals before the National Assembly, the co-presidents of Nicaragua from their bedroom can dispense power to coordinate all “legislative, judicial, electoral, control and supervisory bodies, regional and municipal” – institutions that were formerly independent under the constitution.

In effect, they will have oversight over the National Assembly, the judiciary and also the election management body.
