Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has nullified the controversial traditional councils created by his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki, in Edo South Senatorial District.

Okpebholo also reinstated the statutory financial entitlements of the Benin Traditional Council (BTC) and ordered a return to the pre-existing structure before the councils’ creation.

This was revealed in a statement by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, on Sunday in Benin City.

“This administration also hereby abolishes the new traditional councils in Edo South, created by the last administration,” the statement declared.

Okpebholo further aligned with the Federal Government’s directive by restoring the Oba of Benin’s full statutory rights over ancient artefacts looted during the 1897 Benin Massacre. The artefacts were previously the subject of a contentious policy under the Obaseki administration.

The state government also reversed the revocation of the concession granted to the Oba Akenzua II Cultural Centre and pledged to rehabilitate the facility for its original cultural purpose.

Additionally, Okpebholo distanced his administration from the Museum of West Africa Art (MOWAA), championed by the former administration, and reaffirmed support for the Benin Royal Museum project to house the repatriated artefacts.

“The Federal Government had issued a Gazette recognizing the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, as the exclusive owner and custodian of the repatriated Benin artefacts. Governor Okpebholo respects the rights and privileges of the traditional ruler and pledges his administration’s full support,” the statement read.

Okpebholo emphasized his administration’s commitment to respecting Benin customs and traditions while refraining from interfering in the internal affairs of the Benin Traditional Council.

These measures, the statement added, aim to mend strained relationships between the government and the people of Edo State while restoring the cultural heritage and dignity of the Benin Kingdom.
