Why Okpebholo Is Determined To Probe Me – Obaseki
Former Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has criticized Governor Monday Okpebholo over plans to investigate his administration, describing the move as a diversionary tactic to mask governance failures.
GWG.ng reports that on Sunday, Governor Okpebholo announced the formation of a 14-member panel tasked with reviewing Obaseki’s tenure. The panel aims to assess the assets and liabilities of the previous administration, a step Okpebholo claims is necessary for transparency and to steer the state toward effective development.
According to Okpebholo, despite multiple requests, the Obaseki-led government failed to provide a comprehensive database of its fiscal activities, offering only limited and incomplete data. The newly established committee, which will be inaugurated on Tuesday, is expected to address these gaps as part of the governor’s pledge for accountable leadership.
In a swift response, Obaseki’s spokesperson, Crusoe Osagie, dismissed the probe as a politically motivated distraction from what he described as Okpebholo’s lack of preparedness for governance.
“Governor Okpebholo’s administration is already proving ineffective, and this investigation is a futile attempt to divert attention from that reality,” Osagie said.
He highlighted that Obaseki’s government implemented transparent practices, including the creation of Edo State’s first asset register, which was handed over to the current administration. He argued that the probe is a politically charged maneuver fueled by figures seeking revenge over past political grievances.
Osagie further accused Okpebholo of wasting state resources on investigations rather than addressing pressing governance issues. He urged the governor to focus on delivering impactful results, reminding him that Edo citizens would judge his administration based on tangible progress, not political theatrics.
Observers have noted that the development reflects deepening tensions between the past and current administrations in Edo State, with the public awaiting the outcomes of Okpebholo’s investigative panel.
