Fear In University Campus As 3 Lecturers Die Within 48 Hours

Concerns have arisen among the faculty members of Taraba State University (TSU) in Jalingo after the sudden deaths of three of their colleagues within a span of just 48 hours.

The deceased include a professor, a PhD holder, and a lecturer, which has deeply affected the academic community and raised questions about the challenges they face.

The first death occurred on Thursday when Professor Akporido Samuel, the former head of the Department of Chemical Sciences, collapsed and passed away in his office. His sudden death shocked both his colleagues and students, as he had been a respected figure in the department.

The following day, Dr. Kiliobas Sha’a, the former head of the Department of Biological Sciences, also passed away in the early hours of the morning. Dr. Sha’a’s death was attributed to complications from high blood pressure, which he had been struggling with.

That same day, Ibrahim Saleh Bali, a lecturer in the Department of Educational Foundations, died at the Federal Medical Centre in Jalingo after battling a prolonged illness.

Sources indicated that while Professor Samuel collapsed unexpectedly in his office, Dr. Sha’a’s death occurred at home, and Mr. Bali passed away after a long period of medical treatment. A family member of Bali shared that the lecturer had sold his personal belongings to cover his medical bills before being transported back to his village by university officials, where he ultimately passed away.

The sudden and untimely deaths have left the university’s faculty members concerned, especially given the financial difficulties they face. Lecturers at TSU have expressed fear that their own health and well-being could be at risk due to similar hardships.

One anonymous lecturer voiced the collective concern, saying, “Their death is such that it reminds all of us of what we are passing through in this institution. It shows that it can happen to anybody here, since we are sharing the same financial plight. We are pleading with the government and the university authority to step up and address our demands. We are passing through a series of hardships.”

Dr. Mbave Joshua, the chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at TSU, also voiced his concerns about the poor working conditions faced by the lecturers. He emphasized that many educators at the institution are struggling due to insufficient financial support, which adds to the stress they already face.

At the time of this report, the director of information at Taraba State University, Mallam Sanusi Sa’ad, could not be reached for comment. His phone calls went unanswered, leaving faculty members’ concerns unaddressed by the university’s administration.

The deaths of these three prominent faculty members have sparked a broader conversation about the need for better financial support and resources for the university’s staff, many of whom feel that their health and livelihoods are being jeopardized by the financial hardships they endure.
