4,449 Police Officers Take IG To Court Over Refusal To Grant New Ranks
The National Industrial Court in Abuja has scheduled December 18 for further proceedings in a case filed by 4,449 police officers against the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and the Inspector General of Police (IG).
The officers allege that despite being promoted and having their new ranks approved by the Police Service Commission (PSC), the IG has refused to decorate them with their new ranks.
The officers’ counsel, Barrister Muka’ila Yahaya Mavo, urged the court, led by Hon. Justice Rakiya B Haastrup, to direct the NPF and the IG to implement the 19th plenary decision made by the PSC. This decision had approved the promotions of the 4,449 officers in accordance with the PSC Act.
Mavo emphasized that the PSC’s decision was in line with section 6(1)(a) of the PSC Act and section 16(3)(a) of the Police Act. He also pointed out that it has been the long-standing practice between the NPF and PSC, which has been affirmed by the Supreme Court. The Court ruled that the PSC is responsible for the appointment, promotion, and discipline of all police officers, except for the IG.
In response, ACP Isa Garba, representing the NPF, told reporters that the Force Public Relations Officer (PRO) is the appropriate authority to provide more details on the matter.
