Tragic End: Father Dies Searching For Daughter
Ryan Kobayashi, father of a missing Hawaii woman’s father, who had traveled to Los Angeles to search for his missing daughter, was found dead near Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on Sunday.
The body of Ryan Kobayashi, 58, was discovered in a parking lot along Century Boulevard at around 4 a.m. Los Angeles Police Department officials responded to reports of a body in the area and confirmed the death appeared to be from suicide.
Ryan Kobayashi had come to Los Angeles in search of his daughter, 30-year-old Hannah Kobayashi, who had been missing since November 8. She was last seen at LAX, and her family had not heard from her until November 9. According to the LAPD, Kobayashi last contacted her family by phone on that day.
In a statement on Sunday, Ryan Kobayashi’s family confirmed his death, describing it as a “devastating tragedy.” The family added, “After tirelessly searching throughout Los Angeles for 13 days, Hannah’s father, Ryan Kobayashi, tragically took his own life. This loss has compounded the family’s suffering immeasurably.”
The family urged the public to continue focusing on finding Hannah, stressing that she is still missing and believed to be in imminent danger. “It is crucial for everyone to remain vigilant in their efforts to locate Hannah,” the family said.
Hannah Kobayashi had boarded a flight from Maui to New York City on November 8, with a stop at LAX, but she never arrived in New York. Her family explained that she had landed at LAX but missed her connecting flight. She was then seen visiting The Grove shopping center on November 10, attending a Nike event. The next day, she appeared to return to LAX but did not board another flight. Later that day, she sent “strange” text messages to her family.
LAPD spokesperson Charles Miller confirmed that the department is treating Kobayashi’s disappearance as an “active missing person case,” but declined to provide further details.
Kobayashi’s sister, Sydni, shared with the media that a friend of Hannah’s had reached out about the “strange” text messages. In the messages, Hannah mentioned her ID being stolen and expressed concerns that someone she trusted was trying to take her money. “She seemed like it was someone else or she was just totally out of it,” Sydni said. “It just didn’t seem right because it’s not how she normally texts.”
Hannah had planned to meet her aunt and spend time with family in upstate New York, according to her sister.
