Bayo Onanuga, the spokesperson for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has stirred discussions online after referencing a past statement credited to former President Olusegun Obasanjo regarding Nigeria’s refinery operations.

Sharing a screenshot of a September 5, 2023 publication by The Guardian Newspaper on his official X (formerly Twitter) page, Onanuga highlighted a quote attributed to Obasanjo where the former leader doubted the prospects of the refineries working. The statement read: “I tried to get refineries working, Tinubu’s plan won’t work.”

In his reaction, Onanuga captioned the post with a philosophical reflection, emphasizing resilience and faith. He wrote:

_”Never say never: A lesson for all mortals. Only Almighty God possesses the divine authority to declare what is achievable or not.

Today, the Port Harcourt refinery begins its operations, producing petroleum products against all odds and skepticism.

This serves as a profound reminder to all of humanity, including our former leaders, that perseverance, determination, and faith in our capabilities can overcome even the harshest challenges.

Let us learn from this moment that limits are often set by our own doubts, and with collective effort and unwavering resolve, we can bring about the change we seek. #Resilience #Empowerment #Leadership.”

Onanuga’s post follows the announcement on Tuesday that the Port Harcourt Refinery had commenced production. This achievement comes after years of failed attempts under successive administrations to revive Nigeria’s moribund refineries.

The refinery is reported to be operating at 60% capacity, processing 60,000 barrels of crude oil per day.

Netizens have since reacted to Onanuga’s post, with some commending Tinubu’s administration for achieving what appeared to be insurmountable, while others debated Obasanjo’s stance.

The development signals hope for Nigeria’s oil sector as the country seeks to reduce reliance on imported petroleum products.
