BREAKING: Journalist Fisayo Soyombo Released After Army Detention

Renowned journalist Fisayo Soyombo has been released by the Nigerian Army after being detained for three days.

Soyombo, who is the founder of the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), was arrested under suspicion of involvement in illegal oil bunkering.

The arrest sparked concern within the press community, with FIJ issuing a statement calling for his immediate release. The organization also raised alarm over the growing threats to press freedom in the country. Soyombo, known for his investigative reporting on corruption, abuse of power, and human rights violations, has faced various threats and harassment in the past.

The Nigerian Army’s 6th Division explained that Soyombo’s arrest was based on suspicions related to illegal oil bunkering. This claim led to mixed reactions, with many questioning the reasoning behind the arrest.

In response to the situation, FIJ confirmed Soyombo’s release, thanking supporters for their involvement in the media campaign that helped secure his freedom.

“We can confirm that our founder @fisayosoyombo has now been released by @HQNigerianArmy, following the intense media campaign you all mounted,” FIJ shared on X (formerly Twitter).

The foundation also addressed the Army’s claim about illegal oil bunkering, stating, “FIJ acknowledges the Nigerian Army’s deliberate mischaracterisation to suggest an involvement in ‘illegal oil bunkering.’ FIJ will also address this statement appropriately.”

FIJ’s immediate concern is Soyombo’s safety after his release, as they are worried about the potential risks stemming from the Army’s access to information about his fieldwork during the detention period. They expressed hope that his safety would not be compromised following his release.
