The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has announced an investigation into complaints against key players in the economy including GTB, MTN and Air Peace.

The probe of GTB, MTN and others was disclosed in a statement by the FCCPC Director of Corporate Affairs, Ondaje Ijagwu, on Sunday.

In the banking sector, the FCCPC revealed plans to investigate Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) following numerous reports of network issues that have disrupted customers’ ability to access their funds or use banking applications effectively.

For telecommunications, the Commission will address complaints against MTN Nigeria regarding undelivered data services, unexplained data depletion, and poor customer service.

In the aviation industry, Air Peace Limited is under scrutiny for allegations of exploitative ticket pricing, including significant fare increases for advance bookings on specific domestic routes.

According to Ijagwu, these investigations are scheduled for December 3rd, 4th, and 5th. They aim to tackle poor service delivery, unfair practices, and possible violations of consumer rights.

The inquiries will be conducted under the provisions of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018, which empowers the FCCPC to investigate and resolve practices that harm consumer rights, disrupt market fairness, or foster unfair competition.

The Commission emphasized that these engagements offer an opportunity for companies to address consumer concerns, clarify business operations, and comply with regulatory standards. The involved companies are expected to appear before the FCCPC on the designated dates to provide information and responses that will help resolve the issues promptly.

“This action reflects the Commission’s commitment to safeguarding consumer rights, fostering a fair marketplace, and ensuring accountability across all sectors,” the FCCPC stated.

The agency also encouraged consumers to report instances of poor service delivery or exploitative practices through its official channels to aid its efforts in ensuring fair business practices.
