Renowned investigative journalist Fisayo Soyombo has raised concerns over a disturbing video involving a Customs officer allegedly assaulting two civilians in Oloko, Badagry.

In a social media post directed at the official handle of the Nigeria Customs Service (@customsNG), Soyombo questioned the actions of a man identified as “Aboribo Custom,” who was seen on the left side of the footage reportedly brutalizing the civilians.

The incident occurred near a Customs checkpoint in what Soyombo referred to as a “smuggling zone.” According to the journalist, the victims were allegedly attacked for attempting to record videos in the area. The footage, which has since sparked reactions online, raises questions about the transparency of Customs operations in such zones.

“What secrets exactly are you hiding around Customs checkpoints to warrant assaulting two grown men in this manner?” Soyombo queried in his post, accompanied by the video evidence.

The viral footage has left many netizens demanding accountability from the Nigeria Customs Service, with some speculating that the assault could be an attempt to intimidate individuals from exposing alleged illegal activities.

Read some netizens’ reactions to the viral video below;

@Azeez Adams: Nigeria is the only country in the world, where you are seen as a criminal for exposing criminal activities.

@Idan: I don’t even know what to say; why are Nigerians scared? I know people are more angry than I am but where are all of you on this app. A hard rebellious action need to happen fast

@olusegunbakare: As far as I am concerned, Tinubu is also involved in this madness bcos there is no way a sitting president would say he has not been informed about Fisayo expose on the Customs. This madness is deep.

@jskay7: All I can say is thank you Fisayo.Someday, citizens will wake up and say enough is enough.Just sad that those officers won’t be held accountable in the interim.

As of now, the Customs authorities are yet to release an official statement addressing the incident or clarifying the actions of the officer in question. The silence from the agency has further fueled public curiosity about operations in the region and whether due process is being followed.

Soyombo, known for his fearless exposés on corruption and institutional malpractices, has urged the Customs Service to explain the conduct of its officers and ensure accountability in their dealings at checkpoints.
