Edo Tribunal Lists 6 Petitions Against Okpebholo
The Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal will on Monday begin to review petitions against the victory of Monday Okpebholo, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, in the September 21, 2024, election.
Tribunal Secretary Muazu Bagudu confirmed the pre-hearing sessions for seven petitions filed by opposition parties and candidates challenging the results.
On September 22, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Okpebholo as the winner of the election, stating he secured 291,667 votes. His closest competitors, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party, received 247,274 and 22,763 votes respectively.
The PDP, along with six other political parties, has formally contested the results. The PDP is demanding the nullification of the election and calling for its candidate, Asue Ighodalo, to be declared the winner. Their case, identified as EPT/ED/GOV/02/2024, challenges INEC’s declaration of the APC candidate’s victory.
In total, the tribunal will consider seven separate petitions, including suits from parties such as the Accord Party, Social Democratic Party, Allied Peoples Movement, Action Democratic Party, and Zenith Labour Party. These cases involve allegations against INEC, Okpebholo, and the APC, with claims of electoral irregularities.
The tribunal, led by Justice Wilfred Kpochi, will assess the validity of these petitions and deliver its verdict. This process follows the establishment of the Election Petition Tribunal by the National Judicial Council a week before the September 21 poll.
