The Kwara State Government has demoted Hajia Fatimoh Hamzat Nike, a teacher accused of maltreating a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member posted to Government Day Junior Secondary School, Kulende, Ilorin.

According to a joint statement issued in Ilorin by the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo Kawu, and the Executive Chairman of the Kwara State Teaching Service Commission, Mallam Bello Tauheed Abubakar, the teacher has been downgraded by two grade levels over her maltreatment of the NYSC member.

The government explained that an investigative panel found Hamzat guilty of multiple infractions, including fighting on duty, insubordination, the use of foul language, and disrespect for the NYSC uniform, which symbolizes national identity. These actions were deemed violations of public service rules.

In addition to the demotion, the teacher will be transferred to another school and required to attend counseling sessions over her brush with the NYSC member.

The state government expressed regret over the incident, emphasizing that such behavior is unacceptable and unrepresentative of the people of Kwara State. Officials assured the NYSC management that measures have been put in place to prevent future occurrences.

The statement further urged teachers across the state to adhere to ethical standards and public service rules, reiterating the government’s commitment to continuous training on professional conduct and service ethics.
