PDP Crisis: BoT Slams Damagum, To Meet Wike Next Year

The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced plans to meet with Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), to address the ongoing crisis in the party.

The BoT Chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara, revealed the plans of a meeting with Wike following an emergency meeting of the PDP elders forum held in Abuja on Thursday. He said the meeting with the former Rivers State governor would take place in January 2025.

At the meeting, the BoT expressed dissatisfaction with the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC), led by Umar Damagum, for repeatedly delaying the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting. Wabara noted that since Damagum became acting National Chairman after Senator Iyorchia Ayu’s removal, there has been increasing criticism from party leaders, with calls for his resignation.

In April, during the party’s 98th NEC meeting, it was agreed to create reconciliation and disciplinary committees, hold Ward and State Congresses, and appoint a permanent National Chairman. However, plans for the 99th NEC meeting, initially set for August and later postponed multiple times, have now been indefinitely delayed.

The PDP Governors Forum, led by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, has since directed the NWC to hold the NEC meeting by February 2025. Wabara expressed concern over the delays, warning that they could undermine party unity and member confidence.

He said, “Today, we convene under challenging self-inflicted circumstances, compelled by our collective concern for the current state of our great party. As custodians of the PDP’s conscience and legacy, it is our responsibility to uphold the integrity of this institution and ensure it continues to serve as a beacon of hope for democracy and good governance.”

Wabara added, “It is with a deep sense of disappointment that I must express the Board’s dismay at the continued shifting by the National Working Committee (NWC) in convening a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting. This delay not only undermines the trust and confidence of our members.”

He emphasized the importance of sticking to schedules and commitments, stating that the NEC is a key platform for consultation, cooperation, and decision-making within the PDP. “Prolonged delays may worsen current issues and create unwarranted divisions within our ranks,” he warned.

Wabara urged the NWC to convene the NEC meeting in February 2025 as directed, demonstrating leadership and accountability. He also stressed the need for the PDP to offer credible solutions to Nigerians struggling under difficult economic policies, rising costs of living, and poverty.

“Our party must rise to this occasion by offering credible alternatives and amplifying the voices of the suffering masses,” he said. “Let us reaffirm our commitment to the values of fairness, equity, and prosperity for all Nigerians.”

The BoT Chairman concluded by emphasizing the need for unity within the PDP. He said personal ambitions should not overshadow the party’s shared vision for a better Nigeria. “Our governors are the bedrock of the PDP’s successes across states, and their synergy is vital for our collective progress,” Wabara stated.

He added that the BoT would continue seeking peace and unity within the party with Wike and other tendencies within the PDP. “We will restart our efforts for reconciliation in the new year, beginning with a meeting with former Governor Nyesom Wike to seek lasting peace.”
