2027: APC Rejects Campaign For Jonathan To Replace Tinubu
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticized a group in the party, Team New Nigeria (TNN) over its move to advance President Bola Tinubu as the party’s 2027 presidenti candidate.
GWG.ng reports that the group has been flooding major areas of Kano with Jonathan campaign posters.
The posters, spotted on major streets like Gyadi-Gyadi/Zoo Road flyover, Kofar Nasarawa, and State Road, carried messages such as “Team New Nigeria 2027; The Goodluck Nigeria Needs — Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.”
TNN has also set up a harmonization committee in Kano State and claimed to have mobilized over 26 million registered voters nationwide. The group stated it had developed essential party structures, including a flag, logo, constitution, and manifesto, and was preparing to register as a political party with the Independent National Electoral Commission.
In response, Nze Chidi Duru, APC’s Deputy National Organising Secretary, dismissed the group’s activities. He emphasized that Jonathan could not receive the APC ticket because he is not a registered member of the party.
Duru said, “I will not venture into any conjecture. It is a group I consider to be amorphous that is not known to the APC. If they were genuine members of the APC, it would have been clear to them that former President Goodluck Jonathan was not a member of the party.”
He recalled a similar incident during the 2023 elections when some supporters purchased nomination forms for Jonathan under the APC platform. That move, he explained, was dismissed, and Jonathan was not considered for the ticket.
“Even when a group purchased a form for him within the APC in the last election, they were immediately discountenanced and Jonathan was not given the ticket. Until he is a card-carrying member of the APC, it is only then we can give him that recognition,” Duru added.
He further stated that TNN’s actions confirmed they were not connected to the APC. “If they are members of the party and want to form a different initiative within the APC, they are more than welcome. It is the beauty of democracy. But since this has not been done and they are now working outside the APC’s structure, they cannot be considered members or linked to the party in any way,” he concluded.
