BREAKING: Tension In Kano As Securitymen Block Emir Sanusi II
Tension rose in Kano on Friday as security forces blocked Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II from leaving his palace.
This prevented him from attending a planned ceremony in Bichi Local Government Area, where he was expected to oversee the presentation of a staff of office to a newly appointed District Head.
Heavily armed security operatives, including Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs), were stationed at the palace gates, stopping the Emir from proceeding to the event.
Reports indicate that Emir Sanusi II had intended to accompany the newly appointed Wamban Kano, Munir Sanusi, to his official posting in Bichi. However, the blockade highlights the continuing tension within Kano’s traditional leadership structure.
This development follows Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s recent decision to reinstate Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano. Sanusi was controversially removed in 2020 by the former governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, who replaced him with Aminu Ado Bayero. Ganduje’s actions led to significant divisions within the Emirate system.
Governor Yusuf’s move to restore Sanusi II has revived old tensions between supporters of Sanusi and Ado Bayero. Friday’s blockade seems to reflect the ongoing power struggles stemming from these divisions.
The crisis within Kano’s Emirate has deeply polarized traditional institutions in the state, with factions aligned to the two Emirs clashing over leadership and influence.
