The Police Service Commission (PSC) has taken disciplinary action against several senior officers, dismissing 18 and demoting 19 others.

This decision was part of the outcomes of the Commission’s recent meeting in Abuja, chaired by its Chairman, retired DIG Hashimu Argungu.

According to a statement from PSC spokesperson Ikechukwu Ani, the dismissed officers included 10 Assistant Superintendents, four Deputy Superintendents, two Chief Superintendents, and one Superintendent of Police.

The demoted officers included one Assistant Commissioner of Police, one Chief Superintendent, two Superintendents, two Deputy Superintendents, and thirteen Assistant Superintendents.

The PSC reviewed and addressed a total of 110 pending disciplinary matters, along with 23 appeals and petitions and 13 court judgments requiring compliance. “Most of the officers dismissed are also to be prosecuted by the Legal Unit of the Nigeria Police Force,” the statement revealed.

In addition to dismissals and demotions, the Commission issued reprimands, warnings, and severe reprimands to other officers found guilty of misconduct. Meanwhile, three disciplinary cases were temporarily set aside as the Inspector General of Police was asked to provide further details.

DIG Argungu emphasized that disciplinary issues would be addressed promptly, ensuring that officers unwilling to continue in their roles are appropriately dealt with and those guilty of misconduct face suitable punishment.

He also warned officers against involving themselves in civil disputes such as land issues, marriage problems, or rent-related disagreements. “The courts should handle such matters,” he said, stressing that the Police should focus on criminal cases and matters that threaten public safety.
