Wizkid Fans Slam Davido’s Use Of Brenda Fassie’s Hit
Brenda Fassie has become a hot topic as some South Africans and Nigerian fans of Wizkid express anger toward artiste Davido for sampling her 1997 hit song “Vulindlela” in his new track “Funds.”
Many fans of Brenda feel the sample doesn’t do justice to the original masterpiece.
At the same time, some fans of Wizkid are criticizing Davido for “wasting” the sample and forcing the Brenda song. However, Davido’s supporters, known as 30BG, are praising the collaboration with Chike and Odumodublvck, celebrating the song as a fitting tribute to Brenda’s legendary track, 27 years after its release and 20 years since her passing.
Brenda Fassie was a celebrated South African singer, songwriter, dancer, and anti-apartheid activist. She earned titles like the “Queen of African Pop” and “Black Madonna” for her immense talent and impact.
On April 26, 2004, Brenda collapsed due to suspected cardiac arrest and asthma and was rushed to the hospital. She fell into a coma and, despite visits from leaders like Nelson Mandela, her condition worsened. After being taken off life support due to severe brain damage, she was pronounced dead on May 9, 2004.
An autopsy revealed that a cocaine overdose caused the brain damage that led to her death. Brenda left behind a son, Bongani Fassie, who has become a music producer, entrepreneur, and filmmaker. Interestingly, Brenda had hoped Bongani would pursue a legal career to help manage her estate and legacy.
