Delta Police Under Fire After Fatal Shooting Of Young Man
A tragic incident unfolded in Ozoro, the headquarters of Isoko North Local Government Area in Delta State, when a police officer fatally shot a young man believed to be a student.
The victim, identified as 17-year-old Emeka Odogwu, was allegedly a 100-level student at the Delta State University of Science and Technology.
According to eyewitnesses, the fatal shooting happened on December 6, 2024, following a disagreement involving fireworks. During the altercation, the police officer reportedly cocked his rifle and fired at close range, hitting the young man in the head and killing him instantly.
A source within the Ozoro police confirmed that the Area Commander, ACP Zakari Mohammed, was outraged upon hearing the news. He immediately ordered the arrest and detention of the officer responsible. However, conflicting reports emerged, with another police officer claiming the victim was not a student. “The boy is from Ndokwa, but he is not a student of the school. His parents have already given statements,” the source stated.
The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Bright Edafe, also confirmed the incident. “Yes, the incident is true, and the officer has been identified and detained,” he said. Another source revealed that the accused officer would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation and disciplinary action.
The tragic event has caused widespread tension in the university town. Many residents criticized the unprofessional behavior of some junior police officers, highlighting a pattern of misconduct. One resident lamented the recurring issues, saying, “Weeks ago, a young man from Asaba died from a head injury, and the police claimed he ran into a wall. These stories are becoming too frequent. By next week, another youth could lose their life.”
The shooting follows other troubling incidents involving the police in the area. For instance, a Delta State security team, Delta Hawk, previously shot a Nollywood cameraman named Don Oneopara, leaving him severely injured. Despite the severity of the injuries, no financial support was provided for his medical bills.
Community members and activists are demanding justice for Emeka Odogwu. Many are calling for the swift prosecution of the officer involved and comprehensive reforms to prevent similar tragedies. As of press time, it remains unclear whether the detained officer has been officially handed over to the SCID for further investigation.
The situation underscores ongoing concerns about police misconduct and the urgent need for accountability within the force. Residents continue to watch closely as they await updates on the case.
