Federal Civil Servants Finally Get Delayed November Salary

The Federal Government has started disbursing the delayed November 2024 salaries to civil servants, following complications arising from the transition from the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) to the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS).

The disruption, which affected various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), not only delayed salaries but also temporarily halted funding for several programs and projects, exacerbating financial stress for workers already burdened by inflation and economic challenges.

Civil servants across the country expressed frustration over the delay, as many were depending on their salaries to meet personal financial obligations. The situation drew sharp criticism, especially from labor unions. The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics (SSANIP) raised serious concerns about the negative impact of the delayed payments on its members.

In a letter to its members, SSANIP National President Philip Ogunsipe emphasized the critical importance of timely salary payments. He stated, “Timely salary payments are not just essential but critical for the sustenance of our members and their families. This unwarranted delay has imposed severe financial hardships, further exacerbating the already difficult living conditions faced by Nigerian workers.” The union attributed the delay to the transition between payroll systems in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.

Reports confirm that salaries have now been paid. A senior director in the Federal Ministry of Defence shared relief at the payment, telling ‘Punch’: “The salary came in this morning after quite a number of days. Some of us were contemplating staying home because the delay had become too much.”

Similarly, a teacher in a government school confirmed receiving her salary and expressed the strain caused by the delay. She noted, “I can confirm that my salary came in on Monday morning around 11 am. It took restraint on my part not to go borrow money, as we’re already in the second week of December. The government should always consider its workers in times like this.”

The delay and subsequent resolution highlight ongoing challenges with administrative transitions and their direct impact on workers’ lives.
