Reps Give 90-Day Grace Period For Tinted Glass Compliance In FCT
The House of Representatives has instructed the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command to pause the enforcement of the ban on tinted glass in vehicles.
The House has given a 90-day grace period to allow for better awareness campaigns aimed at educating the public about the new regulations.
The resolution was passed after a motion of urgent public importance was introduced by Mukhtar Tolani Shagaya. The House also ordered that the police return all impounded vehicles and stop further harassment of motorists in the capital city.
The House further directed the Committee on Police Affairs to engage with the Nigeria Police Force leadership to establish clearer guidelines for enforcing such measures in the future.
Additionally, it called for the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture to work with relevant stakeholders on a public campaign to inform citizens about the new regulations and how they can comply.
Shagaya explained that the recent police directive on the ban of vehicles with tinted windows and covered number plates was intended to help reduce criminal activities like kidnapping.
However, he pointed out that the enforcement of the ban had led to harassment of motorists and residents, as many were not fully aware of the new rules. The lack of adequate time for vehicle owners to adjust to the regulations has resulted in many vehicles being impounded, causing hardship for families and businesses.
