Afe Babalola Impounds Farotimi’s Money

A Federal High Court in Abuja has issued an order halting the production and distribution of ‘Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System’, a book written by lawyer Dele Farotimi.

The injunction, granted on December 6, 2024, follows a legal request from prominent lawyer Afe Babalola and includes the seizure of royalties generated by the book.

The court’s decision, which also restricts the sale and circulation of the book in physical and digital formats, affects major outlets such as Amazon, Rovingheights Bookstore, and Patabah Books. The ruling came after Kehinde Ogunwumiju, SAN, representing Babalola’s law firm, filed the legal action. It prohibits Farotimi, his publishers, and distributors from continuing to promote or sell the book.

The book, which has gained significant attention, makes serious allegations of corruption and manipulation within Nigeria’s judicial system, particularly accusing Afe Babalola of influencing court rulings in favor of his clients. These claims have sparked intense debates about free speech and judicial ethics in Nigeria.

Supporters of Farotimi argue that the court’s decision could undermine freedom of expression, while others contend that the ruling is necessary to protect the reputations of those named in the book.

As the case develops, it has drawn significant public and legal attention, and the outcome will likely have broader implications for the country’s legal system and freedom of speech.
