Atiku Reveals Dele Farotimi’s ‘Crime’

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has strongly criticized the ongoing detention of human rights advocate and lawyer, Dele Farotimi lamenting his arraignment on International Human Rights Day as an irony on the state of civil liberties in Nigeria.

GWG.ng reports that Atiku to X (formerly Twitter), to paint the ordeals of Dele Farotimi as a depiction of the growing suppression of dissent in Nigeria.

Atiku expressed outrage at what he called the “weaponization” of the cyberbullying law to silence voices critical of the government.

“Dele Farotimi’s only offense is his relentless commitment to speaking truth to power and exposing uncomfortable truths that those in authority would rather keep hidden,” Atiku wrote. “This situation highlights a troubling climate of impunity and blatant violations of citizens’ rights, which have sadly become common in Nigeria.”

The former vice president stressed that such actions undermine the essence of democracy, as they strip citizens of their constitutionally enshrined rights. He urged government leaders to honor their oaths of office by protecting fundamental freedoms rather than eroding them.

Atiku’s message comes amid growing concerns about the misuse of cyberbullying laws in Nigeria, which critics argue have been weaponized to target opposition voices and media outlets. Farotimi’s detention has sparked widespread outrage, with many activists and social commentators joining Atiku in calling for his release.

“This International Human Rights Day should serve as a moment of reflection for our leaders. Upholding the rights of the people is essential to strengthening our democracy,” Atiku added.
