Body Of Missing English Sports Star Located
The search for former England rugby international Tom Voyce, who went missing after attempting to drive across a swollen river, ended on Thursday, December 13, 2024, following the discovery of his body.
Voyce, 43, had tried to cross a section of the River Aln near Alnwick, a town located about 50 kilometers north of Newcastle, when his car was swept away by the strong current. The search began on Sunday after Voyce, who had been out with friends the previous night, failed to return home.
The River Aln’s water levels had been dangerously high due to the heavy rainfall brought on by Storm Darragh over the weekend. On Tuesday, authorities confirmed that Voyce had been swept away by the strong currents, and the search intensified as the hope of finding him alive diminished.
A statement from Northumbria Police on Thursday confirmed that a body had been found during the search, though formal identification was still pending. Authorities reassured the public that Voyce’s next of kin had been notified and were receiving support from officers.
Tom Voyce, who played as a wing, enjoyed a successful rugby career, earning nine caps for England between 2001 and 2006. He spent the majority of his club career with Wasps, from 2003 to 2009, winning multiple European and domestic titles. He also played for Bath and Gloucester, amassing 220 Premiership appearances before retiring in 2013. Voyce had lived in Alnwick since 2020, following his retirement from professional rugby.
The authorities, alongside family and friends, conducted extensive searches to find Voyce, and the community has expressed sorrow over the loss of the former sports star.
