Okpebholo’s Ally Under Pressure Over Budget Speech
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the last Edo State gubernatorial election, Asue Ighodalo, has demanded a retraction and apology from Jarrett Tenebe, the All Progressives Congress (APC) chairman in Edo State, over defamatory comments.
Tenebe recently defended Governor Monday Okpebholo after the governor struggled to pronounce the ₦605 billion budget figure during the budget presentation to the Edo State House of Assembly. Although Governor Okpebholo quickly regained composure and continued his speech, the incident sparked widespread ridicule online.
In an attempt to address the criticism, Tenebe shared a video where he attributed the governor’s slip to his inexperience, contrasting it with former Governor Godwin Obaseki and Asue Ighodalo. He accused them of mismanaging public funds, claiming, “Obaseki and Ighodalo wouldn’t have made such a mistake because they’ve stolen billions.”
Ighodalo, through his legal team, has strongly refuted the allegations and demanded an immediate retraction of the statement, along with a public apology.
In the letter, Ighodalo emphasized that the accusation of stealing public funds is baseless and defamatory. His lawyers stated that Tenebe must comply within seven days or face legal action.
