2027: APC Hits Back At PDP Over Jonathan Threat
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has responded to the invitation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) urging former President Goodluck Jonathan to run for the 2027 presidential election on its platform.
Ibrahim Abdullahi, the PDP’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, recently stated that the party was hopeful for Jonathan’s return, believing that he could serve a second term. He also expressed disappointment at the possibility of Jonathan seeking a nomination from another party.
In contrast, APC’s National Director of Publicity, Bala Ibrahim, responded in an interview with ‘Punch’, asserting that if Jonathan were to enter the race, he would face another defeat. Ibrahim emphasized that the APC would not be concerned by Jonathan’s potential candidacy. “The APC defeated him when he was in power. Defeating him now, when he’s no longer in office, would be easy,” Ibrahim said. He dismissed the notion that Jonathan’s return could intimidate the ruling party, stating, “It’s something that won’t even cause the party to lose sleep.”
Ibrahim went on to dismiss any speculation about Jonathan’s chances in the 2027 election, claiming that even if the PDP brought in 10 Jonathans, the APC would still win. “Whoever thinks they can scare the APC needs to go back to the drawing board,” he added. He also emphasized that it was too early to discuss the 2027 election, suggesting that less than 40% of President Bola Tinubu’s mandate had been completed. “Let’s wait until we get closer to the election,” he said.
Ibrahim further noted that the APC’s victory over Jonathan in 2015 was not solely due to former President Muhammadu Buhari’s personal popularity but rather the strength of the party structure. He made it clear that “Buhari did not contest as an independent candidate; it was the party that won the election.”
In 2015, Jonathan, running as the PDP candidate, was defeated by APC’s Muhammadu Buhari, who secured 15,424,921 votes, while Jonathan garnered 12,853,162 votes, marking the first time in Nigeria’s history that an incumbent president lost a re-election bid.
