PDP Begs Urges Goodluck Jonathan To Run For President In 2027

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election under its banner.

This appeal follows the appearance of Jonathan’s campaign posters across major streets in Kano, sparking widespread speculation about his possible return to politics.

Some political observers believe Jonathan is eligible to serve another four-year term, having previously led the country as president from 2011 to 2015. This belief has fueled calls within the PDP for his return to the party’s fold.

In an interview, Ibrahim Abdullahi, the PDP’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, expressed the party’s eagerness for Jonathan to resume his unfinished political journey. Abdullahi emphasized that Jonathan’s return to the PDP would demonstrate loyalty and consistency, stating, “If Goodluck Jonathan is seriously considering running, we have been calling him to come back and complete his term. It will not be out of place, but if he runs with another political party, it will expose the hypocrisy within the APC.”

He further urged Jonathan to remember the criticism and challenges he faced from rival political parties during his tenure. “It’s crucial for him to remember how he was derided, criticised and reduced to nothing by these same people. Now that they are suddenly calling him the messiah, he must not be swayed by their sudden affection. That would be unfortunate,” Abdullahi remarked.

Highlighting the PDP’s historical influence, Abdullahi pointed out the party’s role in producing notable leaders who have shaped national and global policies. He said, “Even the FCT minister is arguably the best performer in his role, and he is a product of PDP. Leaders like El-Rufai, Okonjo-Iweala, Dora Akunyili, Obi Ezekwesili, Akinwunmi Adesina, and Amina Mohammed—all products of the PDP—are the pride of this country.”

The party’s internal dynamics, however, remain in flux, with its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for February 2025 expected to address critical issues.

Diran Odeyemi, the PDP’s immediate past Deputy National Publicity Secretary, suggested that delays in convening the NEC meeting stem from deeper tensions within the party. He hinted at efforts by some factions to unseat acting chairman Damagum, which could create further discord.

“If the PDP intends to seek peace, it must align with Damagum and his supporters and allow the situation to settle before pushing for further changes,” Odeyemi stated. He also warned against rushing the meeting, cautioning, “If you cannot manage yourselves as a political party, how can you manage the country?”

As the PDP grapples with internal challenges, its leadership hopes to navigate these hurdles and solidify its position ahead of the 2027 elections. Jonathan’s potential candidacy, if confirmed, could become a turning point in shaping the party’s future and its strategy for reclaiming national leadership.
