The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed reports suggesting that former President Goodluck Jonathan was invited to run for the 2027 presidential election under its platform.

Ibrahim Abdullahi, the party’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, clarified in an interview with BBC Hausa that the PDP had not extended its presidential ticket to Jonathan.

Abdullahi explained that while he had been asked about Jonathan’s eligibility in a previous interview, he had simply stated that Jonathan, like any Nigerian, was eligible to contest the election as per the law. However, he pointed out that the PDP had not discussed the matter with Jonathan.

Abdullahi also referenced comments made by Jonathan’s wife, Patience, who had firmly stated that her husband would not be seeking the presidency again. She had said that he had left nothing unfinished in office, suggesting there was no reason for him to return. Abdullahi questioned why the PDP would consider Jonathan when party members, including 12 governors and other prominent politicians, were more than capable of running for the presidency.

He concluded by reiterating that the PDP had not issued an invitation to Jonathan to run for president, adding that the ticket would be offered to someone who expressed interest in the position.
