Nigerian rapper and singer Ice Prince has clarified his place in BET Awards history, stating that he, not Davido, was the first African artiste to receive an award on stage.

Speaking during a recent episode of ‘Listening’, Ice Prince addressed the common misconception. He highlighted that African artists were previously presented with their awards backstage, but he broke that tradition in 2013 when he won the Best International Act, Africa Award.

“I am the first African artiste to go on a BET stage and receive an award solo,” Ice Prince explained. “When you guys talk about it, you guys give that credit to Davido.”

Although Davido gained significant recognition for his acceptance speech at the BET Awards in 2018, where he won the Best International Act award, Ice Prince made it clear that his achievement came earlier.

Davido’s 2018 speech also left an impact, as he encouraged more collaborations between African and US artists, gaining widespread attention.
