In a major development, Nigeria has fully met its financial obligations to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for the first time in 19 years.

The country made a complete payment of ₦84 billion and $54 million, covering the entire 2023 levy as well as part of the 2024 levy, extending to July 2024. This marks a historic moment in Nigeria’s commitment to regional cooperation and development.

The announcement was made by Dr. Omar Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, during the 66th Ordinary Summit of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government in Abuja. Dr. Touray highlighted that this payment, made on December 13, 2024, was a significant milestone, reflecting Nigeria’s dedication to the ECOWAS community.

Dr. Touray credited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the achievement, commending his leadership, along with the support of the Nigerian government and its citizens. He also expressed his personal appreciation, stating that the payment demonstrated confidence in the ECOWAS vision and his tenure as Commission President, which began in 2022.

“This payment is a mark of leadership and commitment from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the government, and the people of Nigeria to the ECOWAS community,” Dr. Touray said. He also emphasized that the payment was a personal achievement for him, as it underscored the confidence placed in the organization during his leadership.
