Wolves Sack Coach Gary O’Neil

Wolverhampton Wanderers have parted ways with head coach Gary O’Neil after a series of four consecutive defeats in the Premier League.

The club is currently struggling at the bottom of the league table, sitting second to last with just nine points from 16 matches, following a 2-1 loss to Ipswich on Saturday.

The club confirmed the departure of O’Neil and his coaching staff in an official statement. They noted that O’Neil had joined the club in August 2023, just days before the start of the 2023/24 Premier League season, and had taken on a difficult challenge. Despite this, he successfully led the team to a solid finish in the league that season.

Club chairman Jeff Shi expressed gratitude for O’Neil’s dedication and hard work, saying, “We’re very grateful to Gary for all of his effort, dedication, and hard work during his time at the club, and we wish him and his team the best of luck for the future.”

Tensions were high in the team’s recent matches, with emotional outbursts occurring at full-time. In the game against Ipswich, Rayan Ait-Nouri received a second yellow card, and Matheus Cunha had to be restrained. O’Neil, aged 41, had signed a four-year contract extension in August this year after his first season at the club, which saw Wolves finish 14th.

This season, however, Wolves have found themselves battling relegation. Frustrations reached a peak during the defeat to West Ham on Monday, where a confrontation between Mario Lemina and Jarrod Bowen led to Lemina being stripped of the captaincy.

On Saturday, a last-minute goal by Jack Taylor sealed their defeat, and following the match, O’Neil stressed the need for players to take responsibility for their actions both on and off the pitch.

O’Neil remarked, “We deal with things like that very, very seriously, as you saw last week. It’s annoying in that we’ve got enough to do at this moment in time, we’ve got enough to fix without me having to spend time on things that go on off the pitch. So the players do need to take some responsibility. But I’ll help them with all of it so we get back to work on Monday morning.”
