Trainee Herbalist Arrested For Killing 41-Day-Old Son

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a trainee herbalist, Ifagbenga Taiwo, for allegedly killing his 41-day-old son in Keesi, Adatan, Abeokuta. Taiwo claimed he was under a supernatural influence when the act was committed.

The incident occurred last Monday while the baby’s mother, Raimat Wasilat, was outside washing clothes. She had left the infant on a bed inside their home. Upon returning, she discovered her son’s throat had been slit. Shocked and distraught, she raised the alarm, drawing the attention of neighbors and police.

In a video released on Sunday, Taiwo admitted to killing his son with a knife but claimed he was not in control of his actions. “I didn’t go home on Sunday because of work commitments. On Monday, I went home, took my bath, gave my wife money for food, and left for my apprenticeship,” he said in Yoruba, now translated.

He explained that he later realized he had forgotten his protective charms at home and returned to retrieve them. “About an hour after I went back to work, I felt a strange breeze. My body felt uneasy, and it seemed like something was pushing me to commit a crime.”

Taiwo narrated that when he returned home, he did not see his wife at the washing spot outside. Instead, he went inside, picked up a knife, and killed his baby. “I took a knife from my mother’s room, went to where my son was laid, and that’s the last thing I remember before I regained consciousness. When I realized what had happened, I was shocked and fled through the back door.”

The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident and said Taiwo was arrested after his wife accused him of being responsible for their son’s death.

When asked if he committed the crime as part of a plan to separate from his wife, Taiwo denied it. “I love my wife, and I had no intention of divorcing her. I don’t know how it happened. I only realized what I had done after it was too late. I’m deeply sorry for what I did,” he said.

Taiwo has since appealed to the government for mercy, insisting he was not in control of his actions at the time.
