Husband Charged For Allegedly Murdering Wife With Iron Rods
A 54-year-old man, Eseni Chima, appeared before an Abakaliki Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday for allegedly killing his wife, Ugochukwu Chima.
The charge against Chima relates to murder. However, Magistrate Chinedu Agama did not take the defendant’s plea, citing a lack of jurisdiction over the case.
Agama instructed the police to forward the case file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for further legal advice. The case was adjourned to December 31 for additional proceedings.
Prosecutor Emmanuel Monday told the court that Chima committed the alleged crime on September 4 at 60 Ogbaga Road, Kpirikpiri, in Abakaliki Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. He stated that Chima beat his wife to death using iron rods.
Monday explained that the offence is punishable under Section 319 (1) of the Criminal Code Law, Cap 33, Vol 1, Laws of Ebonyi, 2009.
Chima’s defense counsel, Daniel Onuoha, requested bail for his client, but the court rejected the plea, as it does not have the jurisdiction to grant such in a murder case.
