UNIZIK lecturer shot dead

A lecturer from Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, identified as Dr Osita Chinedu, was tragically shot dead on Monday evening in Awka, the Anambra State capital. The incident reportedly occurred around the High Tension area in Aroma.

Eyewitnesses revealed that the assailants, believed to be members of a car-snatching gang, attempted to force Dr Osita Chinedu to surrender his car keys. During the struggle, the gunmen shot him, leaving him dead on the spot at around 7 p.m. It remains unclear if the attackers managed to steal the car after the shooting.

Commenting on the shooting of Dr Osita Chinedu, a UNIZIK staff member who broke the news to colleagues said, “Yes, someone was shot dead along that High Tension this evening. They are saying that he is a lecturer from UNIZIK, from Nteje. Please, Comrades, let’s be safe during this Yuletide. If they come for your car, surrender it. Our lives are important.”

Another university staff member added, “Any Comrade close to the High Tension axis should confirm the news that a UNIZIK lecturer was shot dead this night.”

Reacting to the killing of Dr Osita Chinedu, a visibly upset UNIZIK colleague described the victim as a fellow academic and sports enthusiast. Speaking anonymously, he lamented the state of security, saying, “A colleague and fellow sports enthusiast was shot dead last night. This is no longer funny. We and our children are no longer safe in this state—a whole capital city.”

As of the time of this report, the Anambra State Police Command, through its spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga, had not issued an official statement about the killing..
