Former Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has accused his successor, Monday Okpebholo, of undermining the Edo Broadcasting Service (EBS).

Obaseki claimed that Okpebholo’s lack of leadership and poor decision-making are negatively affecting the state’s media service, which had made significant progress during Obaseki’s tenure.

GWG.ng reports that Governor Okpebholo’s intervention follows a night visit to the EBS during which he met the place in darkness and the offices in a state of rot.

In a statement issued by Obaseki’s media adviser, Crusoe Osagie, Obaseki revealed that during his time in office, he had connected EBS to the 95MW Ossiomo Power Plant and provided two standby generators: “a brand new 500KVA and additional 200KVA generators.” These arrangements ensured that EBS had continuous power supply, with the Ossiomo Power Plant providing 24-hour electricity and the generators serving as backups during maintenance or technical disruptions.

However, Obaseki expressed concern over Okpebholo’s decision to supply two additional generators – “a 150KVA and 135KVA” – to the station. He questioned the necessity of these new generators, given that EBS was already adequately powered. Obaseki asked, “What exactly does a facility, already powered 24 hours by Ossiomo and backed by two standby generators, need additional generators for?” He also raised concerns about the cost of running these new generators, asking, “Does Okpebholo plan to run EBS entirely on diesel, especially considering the cost implication?”

Obaseki also highlighted the financial stability of EBS during his administration, noting that the station no longer relied on government funding. He said, “While the Ossiomo Power which runs for 24 hours was the main source of power to the media station, the generators served as backups for periods of routine maintenance or other technical interruptions from Ossiomo.”

He questioned whether Okpebholo had managed to maintain this financial independence or had reverted EBS to its previous reliance on government subsidies, asking, “Is EBS still self-sufficient, or has he returned it to a state of dependency on government subvention?”

In his statement, Obaseki criticized Okpebholo’s leadership, saying, “The current retrogression in Edo State, fueled by the cluelessness and lack of capacity of the Governor-select, Monday Okpebholo, has continued to spread like wildfire across all sectors of the State.” He further emphasized that Okpebholo’s management methods were undermining the progress made by EBS, asking, “Has Okpebholo been able to sustain the momentum of growth that allowed the station to remit monthly IGR to the state government?”

Obaseki concluded by urging Okpebholo to focus on improving his leadership skills instead of making poor decisions. “Okpebholo is a politician out of his depth,” Obaseki said, calling on him to “focus on building his capacity for leadership and governance instead of his endless show of shame.”
