7 Things To Know About Ibadan Funfair Tragedy
The ancient city of Ibadan was thrown into mourning on Wednesday when some children who were attending an end of year funfair died as a result of stampede. Here are seven important things you need to know about the pathetic incident.
Venue of the incident
The incident occurred at the Islamic High School, Basorun area of Ibadan, Oyo State.
Organisers of the programme
The event was organised by Prophetess Naomi Shikemi, the ex- wife of the Ooni of Ife and Oriyomi Hamzat, an Ibadan based broadcaster.
Children rushed to hospitals
The children involved were rushed to University College Hospital UCH, and Western hospital were some of the children were confirmed dead.
The role of Oyo State government
Oyo State who dissociated self from the funfair event, mobilised Rapid Response Team to provide medical assistance and transport victims to hospitals in Ibadan.
Arrest made
The Oyo State Police Command had stated that eight persons including the principal of the school and ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife were arrested.
Capacity of the venue
The Ibadan funfair event intended for 5000 participants was overstretched with 7500 attendees leading to a chaotic scene that resulted in the tragedy.
Death tool
So far about 35 minors have been confirmed dead while , the condition of six others are critical in the hospital.
