FIFA Releases Final 2024 Rankings: Argentina Tops, Nigeria Drops
FIFA has released the final world rankings for national football teams in 2024, showing how each country stands at the end of the year.
In Africa, Nigeria’s Super Eagles secured the fifth position, despite a significant drop in their global ranking.
As of December 19, 2024, Nigeria remains in the fifth spot in Africa, but the Super Eagles have experienced a tough year, falling eight places to 44th in the world.
This decline is mainly due to disappointing performances in the final 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, where Nigeria struggled in matches against Benin Republic and Rwanda, failing to secure victories.
In contrast, South Africa’s Bafana Bafana had a great year, moving up three spots to finish 57th globally. Their success in recent qualifiers contributed to this improvement, signaling a strong comeback for the team.
Meanwhile, Ghana, Nigeria’s West African neighbors, faced a challenging year, ending 2024 in 77th place globally. Both Ghana and Nigeria have struggled to maintain their positions among the top teams in Africa.
Here are the top 10 African teams in the FIFA rankings:
